As you may have seen on my Instagram, I recently tackled a t-shirt design project for To The Pointe Dance Academy. Angela reached out wanting a fresh new design for their registration t-shirts. Although I primarily focus on brand design, I knew this would be a fun new challenge to tackle. I sat down with my sketch book and began doodling.
Whenever I start a new design project I try to keep it “offline”. Staying away from my computer allows my creative process to run wild. I am writing, sketching and doodling until I feel like I have a good grip on some creative directions. For the t-shirt design, I knew I wanted to showcase a dancer, the studio name and the year. These three simple requirements left room for a lot of creative freedom. After my brainstorming session felt complete I opened up Illustrator and got started on my rough drafts.
When working with a client, I like to show them some diverse options. It gives me a feel for what creative direction we are going to be heading down and allows them to be more involved in the process. Once I finished my six rough drafts I sent them off to Angela. We picked a direction for the design and fine-tweaked it until it came to life.
